ONIRONAUTICHE

Sara

***

Onironautica is a term created by the German psychoanalyst Frederik van Eeden to describe the experience of the lucid dream, a state of being in which the dreamer is active and aware of every single event, color, scenario. When we are dreaming we are often passive protagonists, viewers of ourselves, on the contrary in the lucid dream we turn into explorers, inventors, travelers.

Beside my interest in themes related to the potentialities of mind and soul, I wanted to borrow this word with mythological flavor for purely poetical purposes, fascinated especially by its etymology which recalls travels through dreams, navigations among the spaces of the unconscious, underground waters.

Most of the music of this album was written during my first pregnancy, a time when I seemed to perceive everything in a new light, more silent and more intense at the same time, and when I often experienced intense dreams.

At the end of the day I used to improvise, letting my thoughts flow freely, and with the passing of the weeks, I felt the desire to match the sound of the accordion with that of the voice.

I have always felt a certain duality in my instrument, a kind of stimulating split, almost a challenge: the accordion is a belly, a lively lung, singing, vibrant physicality, but on the other hand it is the detachment, coldness and rationality of determined pitches and chords, mechanical precision, artificial emission. In this project I needed a new key, a wandering natural register, that would put the metal of the reeds in tight contact with the liquid belly: the singing.

The improvisations slowly became definite lines and over time I felt the need to involve other musicians, artists with different histories and languages, but all sharing a single, great trait: an archaic and magical conception of the sound.

Finally, I dedicate these Onironautiche to my daughter, Maia, a little and great inspirer of dreams.

With so much love and gratitude,

Sara
